Peach Days runner dies A former Brigham City Man, Ian Miles, died Saturday morning, September 12, after he collapsed along the parade route during the Peach Days road race.
Miles, age 32, was running the 10K race when he collapsed. He was not breathing and had no pulse so people at the scene performed CPR until an ambulance arrived, and an automated external defibrillator was used.
He was transported to Brigham City Community Hospital where he died.
Miles, a 1995 graduate of Box Elder High School, had run the annual race for more than five years, often with his father. His parents, Bill and Naomi Miles, and other family members were waiting in front of the Brigham City Tabernacle to cheer him on as he finished the race. Naomi said while waiting they saw an amblance go by. They began to worry about dehydration or another complication but never death.
An autopsy has been performed by the state medical examiner’s office.
It’s Hunger Action Month September is Hunger Action Month and millions of Americans are raising their voices against hunger. Hunger Action Month is an initiative aimed at helping raise awareness of hunger in America. It is sponsored by Feeding America, the nation’s largest hunger-relief charity.
Utah Food Bank is hosting its first-ever Hunger Action Month Food Drive aimed at collection food donations to stock shelves of emergency food networks, including the Box Elder Community Pantry. There is a paper grocery bag included in this issue of the Box Elder News Journal in which to make non-perishable food donations. All donations will go to the Box Elder Community Pantry to help those in need in Box Elder County.
Non-perishable food items may be dropped off at Smith’s in Brigham City between 9:30 a.m. and 2 p.m. on Saturday, September 19. The pantry will be at the top of Smith’s parking lot. Brian Mitchell of CDL Training Center has offered his semi tractor trailer to collect the donations. This food drive is sponsored by APX Alarm.
“At the Box Elder Community Pantry, we are neighbors helping neighbors. Won’t you be our neighbor?” a pantry spokesperson asked.
Citizen’s Academy set Brigham City citizens who want to learn about law enforcement are invited to participate in the next Citizens Police Academy starting Wednesday, September 23, at 6 p.m. Those attending will take part in a modified police academy, giving them insight into the skills, procedures and duties of local police officers.
Classes will be held on Wednesday nights at 6 p.m. for the next eight weeks.
Those who graduate are qualified to participate in the Brigham City Citizens on Patrol. These individuals provide valuable service at community events such as Peach Days to support local sworn officers.
Those interested in attending should fill out an application at the police department as soon as possible. A printable application can be found online at www.brighamcity.utah.gov. For more details call Lt. Mike Nelsen at 435-734-6663.
Landlord training continues The third training class for compliance with the Brigham City Good Landlord Program (GLP)will be held on Saturday, September 19. The class will begin at 8 a.m. at the EMS building, 420 West Forest Street. The eight hour class is a requirement for participation in the GLP and qualification for the 75 percent reduction for the business license required for all residential rentals beginning 2010.
The class is taught by the Brigham City Police Department, Fire Department, Utilities Department and the Box Elder County Landlord Association. The program is designed to reduce crime, including drug use, manufacturing and associated illegal activities. Topics also include Fair Housing rules, Fit Premises Act and other property management items. A certificate of completion will be provided, along with a list of attendees to the city for GLP compliance.
More than 200 landlords have been identified in Brigham City. The expectation is more than 70 percent will participate in the GLP. With only three classes remaining this year, landlords wanting to participate in the program will help themselves by registering early and attending the class. Only 80 can attend the class.
Waiting until the last minute may make it difficult to qualify for the reduction in license fee since there may be no space available in the class.
For registration forms and information contact Eliza McGaha at City Hall or Jerry Ohman at 435-723-9218.
