Just one Brigham City team took advantage of their home field and escaped the second round of the Wasatch Front Football League’s playoffs last Saturday.

The Brigham City Purple Midget football team (13-year-olds) escaped with yet another shutout victory, this time over the Clinton White team, 30-0.

The Clinton Seahawks had enough size that it looked like they might pose a serious challenge to the Brigham City team that has yet to allow a score. But other than stopping the Bees’ first two drives, the Seahawks suffered the same fate as every other opponent of the dominant Bees.

After recovering a fumble with just seconds remaining in the first quarter, the Bees struck quickly when Jayk Brooks used some shifty running through the defense to take a counter play 25 yards for a score.

Another fumble by the Seahawks on their next possession was recovered by the Bees. Matt Williams took a screen pass to the 1-foot line, which quarterback Shad Watson ran in for a score.

Watson scored again near the end of the third quarter when on third-and-15, he broke a run to the outside and showed his breakaway speed for all 73 yards to the end zone.

Watson was taken out at the start of the fourth quarter, which simply proved that the team is made up of more than just the big 13-year-old.

With just minutes left in the game, Teagan Hubbard turned a short pass into a long reception when he turned-and burned for 65 yards for the Bees final score.

The Brigham City Purple midget team will play a team from Kaysville on Saturday in hopes of advancing to the Wasatch Front Football League’s Mini Bowl on Halloween.

But it won’t be easy.

“This team...is the two-time defending champion,” said coach Steve Brooks in an email, adding that they are also undefeated.

The game will be played at Ben Lomond High School on Saturday at 10 a.m.

After the Midget team moved on to the semis, the Jr. Midget Brigham City White squad (12-year-olds) was handed its first loss of the season, 25-0, thanks to the defensive line of the Layton Red team, which was anchored by two “X-players” (in little league football, each team is able to field a certain number of players who exceed the weight requirements). The Bees were never able to get their running game going, while their opponents resorted to trickery, and threw a half-back pass 69 yards for the first, and game-winning, score.

Two other teams—the Jr. Pee Wee (10-year-olds) and Mitey Mites (9-year-olds)—both lost as well, Saturday. The Jr. Pee Wees lost 29-0 to a team from Syracuse, while the Mitey Might squad fell 37-8.
