On September 10th, both of our Utah Senators (Hatch and Bennett) voted “Yea” to confirm Cass Sunstein as the Administrator of the Office of Information and Regulatory Affairs. Only six Republicans in the Senate voted “Yea”, and our Senators were two of them.
Why is this a bad thing? Well, Cass Sunstein believes that the 2nd Amendment does not confer an individual the right to own guns. He believes that hunting should be banned. He believes that animals should have the right to sue you. He believes in the idea of a 2nd Bill of Rights that would create rights to unemployment, adequate food and clothing, decent sheltder, education, recreation, and medical care.
In Senator Hatch’s statement explaining his “No” vote on Sonia Sotomayor, he cited her stance on the 2nd Amendment. Sotomayor believes that cities and states have the right to restrict the right to bear arms. So why wasn’t Sunstein’s stance just as, if not more, troubling to Senator Hatch?
