Mistakes, penalties, miscues plague Bees in loss

Things didn’t look too bad early on for the Box Elder High School football team last Friday.

But a progressing number of mistakes on offense, defense and special teams allowed the Sky View Bobcats to rout the Bees, 48-6.

The Bees’ defense held the Bobcats to field goals in their first two possessions, even after a poor punt of 20 yards set Sky View up on their own 47-yard line.

In Box Elder’s first two possessions, the team looked like they just needed to get their feet under them, but a sack, a near interception and a poor punt on their third possession gave Sky View the ball on the 50.

Sky View quarterback Kyler Carlsen completed his first of five touchdown passes on the night on that drive and gave his team a 13-0 lead.

Early in the second quarter, with the Bobcats up 20-0, it looked like Box Elder had settled in a little bit. Even after a block in the back penalty on a punt gave the Bobcats the ball on the Bees’ 49-yard line, Box Elder held them to three-and-out.

And the offense finally got in on the act too, on their first play of the drive, Sean Smith took the ball from his own 8-yard line and sprinted down the sideline to the Bobcat’s 39. Quarterback Mitch Parrish lobbed a ball to the corner of the end zone to receiver Justus Brown, but the pass was tipped, which Carson Mund grabbed out of the air for a Bees’ score.

On offense, the return of Colby Bahe from an injury that had kept him sidelined for two games, provided an effective change-up to Smith, and Bahe had a few explosive plays for big chunks of yardage.

But from that point on, the Bees could never take advantage of opportunities.

On Sky View’s first play of their next possession, Brown picked a Sky View pass, but five plays later, a fumble gave the ball right back.

And again, on Sky View’s next possession, an interception by T.J. Barlow gave the Bees the ball, which they promptly returned two plays later with an interception.

And the rest of the game was much the same as penalties, turnovers, and mistakes on special teams took opportunities from the Bees and presented them to Sky View.

To open the second half, Sky View intercepted a pass and turned it into a touchdown for a 34-6 lead, and four plays later, a high snap resulted in a blocked punt that set the Bobcats up at Box Elder’s 6-yard line.

The Bobcats’ final score came late in the third quarter, when a Box Elder punt was returned 75 yards.

This week, the Bees will host Mountain Crest on Friday.

The Mustangs are 4-1 overall with a second-place standing in the region, and have outscored opponents 160-77.

The Bees and Mustangs have no common opponents, yet. Mountain Crest beat Bonneville (0-1, 2-3) 16-6 last week.

Game time is scheduled for 7 p.m.
