BEHS golfers take third-place standing to region The Box Elder High School golf team took sole possession of third place in the region after claiming third at two matches last week.
The Bees kicked Mountain Crest and Sky View to fourth and fifth place, respectively, after beating them in matches at home (Eagle Mountain) and Schneiter’s Riverside last week.
Dale Fuller proved to be a steady leader in both matches, shooting a team-low 73 at Eagle Mountain, and tying Austin Cobbley for the low score honor at Riverside with a 77. Cobbley recorded the third lowest team score at home with a 78, behind Dave Walker’s 77. Walker recorded the teams’ fourth-lowest score at Riverside with 80. Nate Cottle recorded the team’s third lowest score at Riverside with a 79.
However, a lot happened this week, with the Bees playing a make-up event for Mountain Crest at Logan River Monday, before competing in the region tournament on Tuesday at The Barn in Ogden (results not available by press time).
The Bees need to stay in third to make the state tournament, but with the regular improvements the team has made over the season coach Kevin Peterson said they have a shot.
“If the kids stay focused and continue to work hard and play hard for each other I feel we can stay in third place and get to the state tournament,” Peterson said.
Local golfers in semis of UGA 8-man event The eight-man team from Eagle Mountain Golf Course is among the best in the state after a tournament two weeks ago.
The eight best players from Eagle Mountain faced off against a team from East Bay in Provo at Wing Pointe in Salt Lake City and beat them, 21-15, to advance to the semifinals in the Utah Golf Association’s 8-man public links championship.
According to Eagle Mountain Assistant Professional Doug Brown, the win is notable for a couple of reasons. First, he said, this is the first time the team has made it out of the first round of the playoffs in the five years the course has been fielding a team.
Second, he said, the East Bay team featured two former state amateur champions as well as a former Canadian Tour player.
Eagle Mountain professional Chris Marx beat East Bay’s former Canadian pro with a 6-under round of 66 in what Brown said was the match of the day.
Another important match was the 7.5-1.5 win by Kevin Peterson and Craig Woodward.
“That was kind of the match that put us over,” said Brown.
The format for the events features four groups of two-somes playing best ball and match play, with a total nine available points per group based on performance on the front, back and overall.
The group will take on the team from Thanksgiving Point tomorrow at Eaglewood in Boutniful for a chance to advance to the finals.
